The Richland High School girls basketball team capped off a historic first season with a trip to the UIL Class 4A Division I state semifinals, A remarkable debut for the program and a milestone for Prosper ISD athletics. Richland advanced to the state semifinals with a major defeat against Frisco Panther Creek 60-41. The victory also marked the first time any girls basketball program within Prosper ISD had won a regional championship.
The Raiders entered the regional championship with a 33-4 record and advanced through the playoff round with a balanced offensive performance. Sophomore Lauryn Williams led the team with a game-high 22 points, while teammates senior Emmy Privatsky and junior Mady Walker each contributed 11 points. Senior Kayla Thornton also helped lead the team on the boards with eight rebounds as Richland pulled away in the second half to secure the win.
The regional victory was especially meaningful for the girls basketball team as they reached a milestone within their first year of representing the school. The Raiders had already defeated Panther Creek twice earlier in district play before meeting again in the regional final, showing the team’s consistency and ability to perform under pressure.
Williams said the team’s goals evolved as the season progressed and the players began to realize the potential they had as a group.
“My goal going into the season was to improve my skills and help my team succeed,” she said. “As the season went on and we started winning more, my focus shifted to making a deep playoff run. I really enjoyed how far we went and all the hard work my teammates and I put into it.”
Preparation and teamwork were major factors behind the team’s success throughout the season. Williams also said the players focused on practicing with intensity and making sure everyone understood their role before each game.
“Before games, we prepared by practicing hard and focusing on our game plan,” she said. “We worked on our plays, defense, and communication so everyone understood their role. This preparation helped us feel confident going into games.”
That preparation helped Richland maintain momentum during the postseason and ultimately reach the state semifinals, an accomplishment few first-year programs achieve.
“A key factor in our success was our teamwork and work ethic,” Williams said. “Everyone on the team was willing to put in the effort and support each other. That commitment helped us during our long playoff run.”
Although Richland’s season ended in the state semifinals, the team’s historic playoff run established a strong foundation for the future of the program. With the experience gained during their first year, the Richland women’s basketball team hopes to build on their success and continue competing at a high level in the seasons ahead.
